Lecture on Importance of Vision Screening Among Children

NIRMAL ASHRAM EYE INSTITUTE (NEI) has taken the initiative to create an awareness, in the society at large, on the importance of VISION SCREENING IN CHILDREN. As part of this initiative, Dr. Mrinal Modhur B., the Anterior Segment and Paediatric Ophthalmology consultant at NEI delivered a lecture at Nirmal Ashram Deepmala Pagarani Public School (NDS) on 07.10.2017 on the occasion of the school’s Parent Teacher Meeting.

The lecture began by an explanation of the anatomy of the eye, visual development of the eye and the concept of visual acuity followed by an enumeration of the key environmental factors that give rise to visual disorders among children. This was followed by a detailed insight to the audience on the various refractive errors, namely, Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism. Other ophthalmic disorders like squint and Amblyopia (lazy eye) were also delved upon.

In the second part of the lecture, the presentation was about the role of teachers in discovering vision problems in students early on. Herein, the imperative for teachers to pay attention to various behaviours among students which are indicative of vision problems were highlighted. The benefit of the same would be two-pronged; one that the problem is diagnosed early on and second that because of early detection and intervention, students would not fall behind in their studies, considering the fact that as much as 80% learning is visual.

In the last part of the lecture, various personality issues and visual difficulties afflicting students today due to an indiscriminate use of smart phones were mentioned.

The event was attended by Ms. Mandakini Pawar, CEO, NEI along with a few Managers from the Institute, namely Mr. Pradeep Singh, Senior Manager, HR, Mr. Sanjay Barthwal, Head, Community Outreach Department, Mr. Sanjay Chhokra, Head, IT, Mr. Pratish Srivastav, Senior Manager, Liaison, Mr. Shashi Shekhar Singh, Head, Diagnostic Optometry and Mr. Mukesh Dhyani, Assistant Manager, Quality and Accounts.
